Varanasi, an educational and musical centre, a home of prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers and musicians who live or have lived in the city as well as it’s a place where, the Asia’s largest residential university sited greatly known as BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY.

An internationally reputed university founded by the great nationalist leader Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya Ji, in the year 1916. With the motto of “KNOWLEDGE IMPARTS IMMORALITY”. Over a period of time, it has developed into one of the greatest centre of learning in India. It has immensely contributed to the progress of the nation through a large number of renowned scholars, artist and scientist.

Banaras Hindu University has a sprawling two campuses, spanning across 3900 acres (main campus+ south campus). University comprises of 3 institutes, 14 faculties, 124 Departments, 4 interdisciplinary centers, affiliated colleges and 3 constituted school, spanning a vast range of subjects pertaining to all branches of Humanities, Social Science, Technology, Medicines,  Fine arts and performing arts for the holistic development of students.

Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Science is being one of the oldest and distinguished centres of learning and has a long lineage of strong academic fabric of BHU. It has hosted scores of scholars and researchers whose contributions have been recognized and acclaimed the world over. The faculty has branched out its new direction by setting up new centers in areas such as women’s studies and peace studies along with some of the professional courses to meet the emerging challenges of the present-day world.

Faculty of Social Sciences is a bifurcation from the Faculty of Arts formerly known as Central Hindu College which was established in the year 1971.

Overview

The department is having a well-maintained library where students get the latest information and they can learn many such things which brings change. In the library there is all latest edition of books related to their course, journals, newsletters and the other reference books for the students.

There are two hostels associated with faculty of Social Sciences namely Mona Devi hostel and Acharya Narendra Dev hostel. Amongst of these two hostels, rooms are allotted to qualified candidates.

Courses offered

Pertaining to different disciplines in the department, The main objective is to connect students to the study of societies and relationships among individuals within societies. These 5 disciplines are well demonstrated and Explained by the experienced and versatile professors.

In addition to the catering of teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the 5 disciplines of:

  1. ECONOMICS,
  2. HISTORY,
  3. POLITICAL SCIENCE,
  4. PSYCHOLOGY AND
  5. SOCIOLOGY.

Under Graduate Courses

  • B.A. (Hons) Social Sciences – 3 years (6 semesters)
  • B.A. Political Sciences – 3 years (6 semesters)

Post Graduate Courses

  • M.A. in Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Public Administration 2 year (4 semesters)

Special Courses

  • Master of Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (MPMIR) under Department of Psychology
  • Master of Arts in Public Administration (MPA) under the Department of Political Science
  • Master of Arts in Social Work (MSW) under the Department of Sociology
  • One Year PG Diploma in Japanese Studies under Centre for the Study of Nepal
  • One Year PG Diploma in Conflict Management & Development (CMD) under Malaviya Centre for Peace Research
  • MA in Conflict Management and Development
  • PG Diploma in Conflict Management and Development

Research is also an integral and significant component of the academic activity at the faculty level and the contribution of some of the teachers has been recognized at national and international levels.

There are various centers and labs maintained for the Researcher. It’s basically an activity room for researcher professors as it combined academic experience with worthy knowledge making learning more effective. The main objective behind establishing centers and Labs in Research is to enable interaction between faculty, scholars, students and academic excellence, real-world problem solving and knowledge creation and dissemination.
