Joint Entrance Examination also known as JEE is an engineering entrance examination which is conducted by the IIT’s for candidates to get selected for most reputed engineering college in India to pursue different courses like B.Tech, B.Pharma, B.Arch, M.Sc. and M.Tech courses.

History of JEE Exam

The pattern for this entrance has changed considerably from the past few years. Earlier, the cut-off was disclosed and candidates were given paper copies of their answers. Since 2013-2014, JEE has gone under multiple variations and online admission process has been acquired. Even the application selection is now done through an online procedure, which was not existing in the past years. This has brought transparency to the entire process.
In 2012, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) notified various modifications for the entire system. The JEE-Main replaced AIEEE for admission to the National Institutes of Technology (NIT’s), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT’s), and also to some other institutes that are authorized as CFTI’s, known as the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes. Another change brought up was the replacement of IIT-JEE by JEE-Advanced. This was primarily for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT’s).
In 2013, the IIT council certified two phases for Joint Admission Board relevant for the IIT’s that were Mains and Advanced. In this strategy, Mains is followed by Advanced. The Joint Admission Process was accomplished by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

What is JEE Main?

JEE Main also known as Joint Entrance Exam – Main is a national level entrance exam supervised by NTA. This Exam is conducted for candidates to offer them admission to BE/B. Tech, B.Plan and B.Arch courses at the IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology), NITs (National Institute of Technology) and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) across the country.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE- Main

The candidates must fulfil the following conditions to be able to get eligible for Main exam.
• Age: There is no age limit for the candidates to appear for the exam.
• Qualifying Examination Appearance Year:
-Candidates who appeared for the 12th standard examination or any other equivalent qualifying examination in previous years can also appear for the Main.
-Candidates who are going to appear for the 12th standard examination or any other equivalent qualifying examination for the present year can also appear in the exam.
• Subjects: Candidates must qualify 5 subjects in total to be eligible for the exam.
• Marks: The following conditions for marks are necessary
-The candidates require 75% as minimum qualifying marks to appear in JEE Mains.
-Candidates should be in the top 20 percentile in the Class 12 exam conducted by the respective Boards in which they appeared.
-Minimum of 65% marks are required for reserved candidates.
• Total Attempts: The candidate can appear for the exam for three successive years that sums up to six attempts in total ( two attempts annually).

JEE Main Cut off

There are two cut-offs for the Mains exam which are released by JoSAA i.e. JEE Main cut-off and Qualifying cut off. Both these cut-offs are different from each other. Admission cut off is vital for admission in the participating institutes. This cut off is released by JoSAA. While the qualifying cut off is the minimum score that a candidate needs to score in order to be eligible to appear for the Advanced. Previous years’ cut off, difficulty degree of the exam, the total number of available seats, the number of appearing candidates are some factors that derive the cut off for the exam.

Admission Process for JEE main

The procedure of admission is carried in the following steps:

• Step 1 – The candidate needs to fill the application form for the Main
• Step 2 – The admit card for JEE Main is downloaded
• Step 3 – Candidate appears in the exam
• Step 4 – This step is to check for the JEE Main result online
• Step 5 – Candidate should participate in the counseling conducted by JoSAA.

Documents required for JEE Main

Here is the list of few documents that candidates must carry with them while appearing for the Main.
I. Admit Card: Admit card is the most important document which is to be carried by the candidate for JEE Main exam. Without this, the candidate is not allowed to appear in the examination.
II. Photograph: Candidates should always carry one passport size photograph with them as the photograph is to be pasted on the answer sheet on the required space during examination.
III. Photo ID: Authorized Photo Ids are also required to be carried along for the examination. These Ids should be original and should not be expired.
IV. Certificate: PwD certificate should be carried along that claim relaxation for the PwD category.

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced also known as Joint Entrance Exam Advanced is conducted every year by the IITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology) and IISc ( Indian Institute of Science) under Joint Admission Board. 4-year Bachelors – BTech, BS,5-year Barch,5-year Dual Degree – BTech, MTech, BS, MS, 5-year Integrated Masters – MTech, MSc, D, al Degree are some courses which could be pursued by candidates after qualifying the Advanced.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2020

Candidate must satisfy the following criteria to be eligible for appearing in Advanced.

I. Performance in JEE Main 2020: Candidates who fall under the list of 2,50,000 ranks are only eligible to appear for the Advanced exam. Whereas the percentage of candidates eligible for admissions under different categories are as follows:

• General category candidates – 46.5%
• General EWS – 4%
• OBC-NCL candidates – 27%
• SC candidates – 15%
• ST candidates – 7.5%
• PWD candidates – Horizontal reservation of 5% in all the above categories

II. Age Limit: Candidates falling under general or OBC category, who are born on or after 1 October 1995 are eligible to appear in the examination. However, there is relaxation of age limit for ST, SC and PwD candidates. Those from the following categories born on or after 1 October 1990 can appear in the exam.

III. Number of Attempts: The candidates can appear in the Advanced exam two times for two successive years.

IV. Earlier Admissions in IIT or ISM :

• Candidates who are pursuing any preparatory course in IITs can also appear in the exam.
• Those candidates whose admission was abolished in IIT after joining cannot appear for the exam.
• The candidates who paid seat acceptance fees and had their seat cancelled or they did not report at the reporting centre, before the last round of seat allotment can also appear in the exam.
