Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi

Banaras Hindu University is a public central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. With more than 30,000 students residing in the campus, it claims the title of the largest residential university of Asia. It is one of the most popular universities of not only India but also of the whole world.

When BHU was Established?

The university is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was established 104 years ago, in 1916 by Madan Mohan Malviya, with the cooperation of Annie Besant. The university’s main campus is spread over 1,360 acres. Besides this there is one more campus of BHU at Barkachha, in Mirzapur district named Rajiv Gandhi South Campus.

History of Banaras Hindu University

The main campus of the Banaras Hindu University was established by Madan Mohan Malviya who was a prominent lawyer, educationist, and Indian Independence activist. At the 21^st conference of the Indian National Congress in December 1905, Malviya publicly announced his intent to built a university in Varanasi. He then published his plans in 1911. Moreover, he left his legal practice to focus on the development of the university.

In October 1915, the BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY bill was passed. Finally, in 1916 the university was established. It was the first university in India that is a result of an individual’s effort. Later the South Campus acquired by Banaras Hindu University, on lease in perpetuity from Bharat Mandal Trust in April 1979 with an area of 2700 acres is situated about 8 km southwest of Mirzapur on Robertsganj highway.

About BHU Main Campus

Main Campus is spread over 13,00 acres of land on the southern edge of Varanasi. The campus layouts approximate a semicircle. The campus has over 60 hostels offering residential accommodation for over 12,000 students.

Sir Sunderlal Hospital on the campus is a teaching hospital for the medical students. It was established in 1926 with 96 beds and now has over 900 beds and is the largest tertiary hospital in the region.

The most prominent landmark is the Shri Vishwanath temple which is located in the centre of the campus. Moreover, there is an Art Archaeological Museum named BHARAT KALA BHAVAN which was established in 1920. The museum is basically known for its collection of paintings, but also includes artefacts, textiles and costumes, Indian philately as well as literary and archival materials.

The Banaras Hindu University is organized into six institutes and fourteen faculties (stream). All the institutes are administratively autonomous, with their own budget, management, and academic bodies.

How to get Admission in BHU?

The University conducts national level UET/PET for seeking admission into various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It usually takes place in the month of May-June for which the registration begins in the month of February and March. The exam is conducted in offline as well as in online mode. The students are being shortlisted according to their marks secured in the entrance exams.
